There are two broad options when it comes to book printing

Batch printing

Print on Demand

Cheaper for very long runs
Can be used for short runs
Books are only produced to fill an order
Batch printing (Traditional printing)    POD  (Harnessing new technologies)
You obtain quotes for the printing process. There are many printers and you can find the firm with the expertise and technical facilities most appropriate to produce your work.  (We will be building a database of suppliers). You can set the price but it might be better not to print it on the book as it might take some time to move the stock and you might want to increase it. For hardbacks, the price can be printed on a batch of dust jackets. For single batch printing, we can advise you on the margins.   We prepare the POD costing and help you set the price of your book. The calculations show you how much you will receive per copy for books sold. This price can be adjusted annually.

As we act as your agent for POD, we must agree the  pricing structure of the book.

You fill in the form and pay the initial half of the fee.

You will receive galley proofs or something similar, depending on the technology, to check before the printing starts   The book designer will send some sample pages and cover designs for your approval.  We will quote any further costs involved.
You will have to make arrangements for the delivery & storage of your books.   There is an annual fee of to maintain your book in the POD system.
At this stage your printer will normally show you a copy of your book in proof form. You need to correct this before the final go-ahead is given for printing.    We send you the printing contracts.

The contract covers how your book will be printed and distributed and how the money will be collected and passed on to you. You should check it carefully before returning a signed copy.

If you want to make any changes your contract will tell you who has to pay. Fortunately, typographic errors are now rare as the manuscripts do not have to be transcribed. Author alterations are not normally accepted at this stage and there  will be an additional charge if you decide to make changes to the text. Major changes could require a complete redesign of the book.   Once we receive your signed contract we will bill you (as agreed) for the second half of the fee, covering the cost of completing the cover design, designing the book and setting it up in the POD system.
If you are using a specialist or batch printer, the cost of printing and delivery will normally be billed on completion.   The ISBN will be issued if required and the barcode sent to the designer.
The book is then printed, bound and any dust jacket fitted. There are warehouse and distribution companies which can store copies on your behalf. Copies can be held in sheet form (i.e. unbound) until required to save some money, but are usually stored as finished books.   The book is printed or 'published' on the POD system. We order the copies agreed in our contract with you for legal deposit, your initial copies and any agreed promotions.
You then publish the book by making it available for people to buy and read.   The book trade is notified that the title is available through the normal channels.

Designing and printing your book is fun and relatively easy. The hard part is selling it and fulfilling the orders.

The good news is that WritersPrintShop is there to do much of it for you.
