The web in all its glory

Tune up your computer

Browsers (AOL, Firefox and Explorer) need a few add-ins (not to be confused with add-ons) to allow you to get the best from the Internet. The clever people who write add-ins make sure they work with all browsers unlike some browser companies who only want web authors to write for them.

You do not need these add-ins to visit the site but it does use Flash images (which need a Shockwave download) which makes the site more colourful and fun to use. The choice is yours.

Some add-in writers also suffer delusions of grandeur and ask you to make their product your first or default choice. The media players are slogging it out on our computers. So check what you are agreeing to when you install add-ins.

You will probably have versions of these already on your computer. They might:

have been pre-installed on your computer,
have come with your Service Provider's installation disk,
have been installed by teenagers in the house,
been semi-automatically downloaded when you wanted to view a site
have decided to install them from a free magazine disk.

If everything here is total technical gobbledygook try the glossary or Writers Web Watch.

Please note

  1. This page is full of Registered names and trade marks. The rightful ownership of all is acknowledged and can be checked on the company sites.
  2. WritersServices disclaims all responsibility for effects running any add-in might cause in particular environments. Problems should be referred to the supplier.

Add-ins

How can they afford to give these products away free?

Well, they sell developers like WritersServices related packages to produce the files that you can use with the viewers that they give away free.

Do you need them?

You can survive without the add-ins but it enhances the way images are handled and lets you listen to music, for example.
